  1. This update for Norton Diagnostics (NDIAGS) provides support
  2. for Stacker 3.1 and corrects a few isolated problems that occur 
  3. only on certain hardware configurations. You should install this 
  4. update only if you are using Stacker 3.1, OR you experience any 
  5. of the following conditions:
  6.  
  7.         -  System reboots or hangs on NDIAGS initialization
  8.         -  System hangs when processing keyboard lights test
  9.         -  PS/2 model 50Z gets stack overflow error
  10.         -  Logitech C9 mouse loses mouse cursor
  11.         -  Serial port Interrupt Identification Register and/or
  12.            Line Status Register fail during test 
  13.         -  Serial or parallel loopback plug not recognized
  14.            when inserted
  15.         -  Backslash (\) key not recognized on European keyboards.

  17. Changes in the update are described in more detail below and in 
  18. the on-line help.

  20. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  21. -------------------------
  22. To update the current version of NDIAGS, copy the three files,
  23. ndgup.bat, ndiagupd.exe and ndiags.rtp, to the directory containing 
  24. the original copy of ndiags.exe.  Be sure the original ndiags.hlp 
  25. file is also present.  Then type:
  26.  
  27.         NDGUP <ENTER>
  28.  
  29. A new BACKUP sub-directory will be created containing your original
  30. ndiags.exe and ndiags.hlp, should it be necessary to return to the
  31. original versions.

  33. IMPORTANT!  If you reinstall NU7 or NDIAGS.EXE from the original 
  34. diskettes, you must reinstall this update.  Before reinstalling 
  35. this update by running NU7UPD, you must delete the files in the 
  36. BACKUP directory. NU7UP.BAT will do this for you.

  38. UPDATE DETAILS
  39. --------------
  40. INITIALIZATION
  41. Some machines rebooted or hung during initialization because of 
  42. a slight difference in keyboard controllers or because a non-UART 
  43. device is using an address reserved by IBM for a serial port.  
  44.  
  45. To address this problem, the OPTIONS command from the FILE menu 
  46. has three additional check boxes: Use Rigorous Keyboard Test, 
  47. Search for Parallel Ports, and Search for Serial Ports.  All of
  48. these options are turned off by using the /RESET switch. You 
  49. should use the following procedure after installing this 
  50. update to enable those check boxes supported by your system 
  51. in order to make NDIAGS more thorough and accurate in its analysis.

  53. 1. Start NDIAGS with the /RESET switch
  54. 2. Choose OPTIONS from the FILE menu.
  55. 3. Check only one of these check boxes.
  56. 4. Select OK. 
  57.    The initialization test re-runs automatically so you can see 
  58.    if your machine is affected. If the option is not supported on
  59.    your system, your checkmark is removed from the check box. 
  60. 5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 until you have tried all three check 
  61.    boxes.

  63. IBM PS/2
  64. This update now allows all IBM PS/2 machines to run the 
  65. keyboard lights test. It also allows NDIAGS to run on PS/2 Model 
  66. 50 machines with some restrictions. (Previously, NDIAGS did not run 
  67. on this model.)

  69. LOGITECH C9 MOUSE
  70. A system with a Logitech C9 mouse will no longer lose the mouse
  71. cursor.

  73. SERIAL PORT REGISTER FAILURES
  74. During serial port tests (selected from the SYSTEM menu), some UART
  75. types would incorrectly "FAIL" either or both the Interrupt
  76. Identification Register and Line Status Register tests.  Additional
  77. tolerance was added to allow for slightly different UART internal
  78. timing in different VLSI implementations.

  80. LOOPBACK PLUGS
  81. During the serial and parallel port tests (selected from the
  82. SYSTEM menu), in some circumstances, NDIAGS did not detect that 
  83. a loopback plug has been attached. The message about not finding the
  84. plug now has a Test Anyway command button. This button allows you
  85. to test ports that don't implement all the "standard" pins, and 
  86. cables attached to those ports.

  88. EUROPEAN KEYBOARDS
  89. European keyboards now correctly identify the backslash (\) key 
  90. when pressed during the keyboard test.
